Pinus spp. of the family Pinaceae, the pine family
I have a few samples of Japanese and Chinese pines so thought I'd dump them all on a single page. I have no plans to seek out web pics for these species but I might add a few if I come across them.
my samples: NOTE: these pics were all taken in very bright incandescent lighting ("soft white" at 2700K) colors will vary under other lighting conditions
both sides of a sample plank of Bhutan pine / Pinus wallichiana --- HUGE enlargements are present.
both sides of a sample plank of Chinese lancebark pine / Pinus bungeana --- HUGE enlargements are present. This sample was loaned to me by David Clark whom I thank for this and other contributions to the site. When I did the end grain update on this piece, there was so much resin in it that the seepage out of the end due to the heat buildup when I got to one of the finer grits was so bad that it ruined that batch of updates and I had to separate it out and start over with the rest. I DID get a decent update out of it eventually, but in the update (below) you can clearly see the translucence at the top of the piece where my bright lights were hitting it. This was one of the most resin-laden piece of pine I've ever encountered but I have no idea if that is typical of the species.

both sides of a sample plank of Chinese red pine / Pinus massoniana --- HUGE enlargements are present. This sample was loaned to me by David Clark whom I thank for this and other contributions to the site. I'm assuming that the dark streaking is mineral stain, not blue stain, but I don't know that for sure.

I really screwed up the focus on the labeled side, but I've already sent the sample back to David, so unfocused it stays.
